What shop drawings are and who approves them
Design drawings from the consultant show what the building must be. Shop drawings show how the contractor will build it. They carry exact dimensions, levels, bar sizes, fixing details and product references. On Qatar projects the contractor submits each shop drawing to the supervision consultant. The consultant reviews it against the contract drawings, the specification and the Qatar Construction Specifications (QCS). Work on that element should start only after approval. Shop drawings do not replace the permit drawings, and they must stay consistent with them.
Structural, MEP and builders work drawings
Structural shop drawings cover reinforcement and formwork. Reinforcement detailing shows every bar: its diameter, shape, length, spacing, laps and cover. A bar bending schedule lists the bars for cutting and bending. Formwork drawings show concrete outlines, levels, construction joints and openings. Coordinated MEP shop drawings combine ducts, pipes, cable trays, drainage and fire pipes in one layout. Sections at corridors, shafts and plant rooms prove that everything fits below the beams and above the ceiling. Builders work drawings then show the civil team where to leave openings, sleeves and equipment bases.
How shop drawings feed as-built drawings
Every approved shop drawing is a step towards the final record of the building. During construction, site engineers mark real changes on the approved sheets, such as a moved pipe or a shifted door. At completion, these marked-up sheets are redrawn as the as-built set. In Qatar the as-built set supports the building completion certificate and the handover to the owner. Good revision control during construction makes the as-built stage shorter and more accurate.

Who is responsible for shop drawings, the consultant or the contractor?
The contractor produces shop drawings under most construction contracts in Qatar. The supervision consultant reviews and approves them. We work for the contractor as its drawing team.
Do shop drawings need authority approval in Qatar?
The supervision consultant approves most shop drawings, not an authority. Fire alarm and fire fighting shop drawings are different. They normally go to Qatar Civil Defence through an approved fire contractor.
Can you prepare only the MEP coordination drawings?
Yes. Contractors often ask for coordinated services drawings and builders work drawings for one project or one floor. We need the latest architectural and structural drawings and the approved equipment data.
What does the timing depend on?
It depends on the number of sheets, the quality of the design information and how fast the consultant returns comments. A priority list lets us issue the most urgent areas first.
